I can assure you I am not a Mormon. I was loaned the book by an ex-Mormon who has since left the religion. okhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06294076599801322345noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9034160943815915799.post-42436769016916969312012-09-25T22:04:07.075-04:002012-09-25T22:04:07.075-04:00The above review was obviously written by a Mormon...The above review was obviously written by a Mormon who is trapped in this cult.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9034160943815915799.post-19353608436188114122011-11-20T09:37:53.532-05:002011-11-20T09:37:53.532-05:00As a non-Mormon who has extensively studied Mormon...As a non-Mormon who has extensively studied Mormonism, Abanes book is bad to terrible. There are actually good works on Mormonism from Mormons and non-Mormons that I would recommend. I would hardly be afriad of reading Mormons either, a group is usually best at speaking on themselves after all.

Jan Shipps is non-Mormon, but excellent. Richard Bushman is Mormon, and also excellent.

The problem Abanes has is that he has no actual training in historical research or how to study history. The tools that Abanes lacks, understanding historical sources, inhibit his grasp of the nuances of Mormonism. He makes up for this by using a LOT of footnotes. I have seen more than one person talk about how well researched he is because he uses so many footnotes. This is like saying someone must be smart because their glasses are so thick.

I would not rely on Abanes at all, if you ever get into a discussion with an educated Mormon they are going to talk circles around you. Mormonism has seen a resurgence in legitimate Scholarship, I would use one o fthose before an amateur work like Abanes.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
